The biggest disadvantage of using RoRo shipping is vehicles are exposed to external elements during transit so there is less protection. The service is only available at certain ports that are equipped for RoRo vessels so it is important to check the availability.

What is Flatrack Shipping?

Flatrack containers are specially designed for bulky and oversized loads, consisting of a stable floor with end walls that can either be fixed or foldable. Flatrack containers offer a highly flexible loading format, enabling the safe transport of complex freight.

One of the biggest advantages of flatrack shipping is the suitability for transporting oversized, heavy or irregularly shaped cargo that cannot be accommodated in standard containers. Flatrack containers can be moved across transport modes such as ships, rail and road.

Slight disadvantages of flatrack shipping is loading and unloading the containers is typically more labour-intensive and often requires cranes or forklifts. Flatrack cargo isn’t always stored below deck, which means it is more exposed to weather conditions, increasing the risk of environmental damage.

Which is Best for Trucks?

When evaluating cost-effective shipping methods, RoRo shipping is often the preferred option for transporting vehicles in high volumes due to its simplicity. RoRo is particularly well suited to routes between ports that are purpose-built for this type of operation, where infrastructure and scheduling are optimised for frequent, streamlined departures.
